When he spoke with The Mercury News on March 20, he was still two weeks away from officially replacing CEO Frank Slootman. Technically, he wasn’t yet ServiceNow’s CEO. That person turned out to be ServiceNow investor relations director Dominic Phillips, who who showed Donahoe how to fill out the proper release form online that soon let him into the gym. “I found someone in the parking lot and asked if they could let me in!” to use the gym for the first time, but my (building) card wouldn’t work,” Donahoe said, while laughing about the matter during an interview at ServiceNow’s Santa Clara headquarters. What was surprising, though, is that even after he was hired as the new CEO at cloud-based service-management software company ServiceNow, he still couldn’t get into the company gym. That he should take on another CEO role should come as no surprise. After all, he held the chief executive job at consulting giant Bain & Co., and served as CEO at e-commerce leader eBay from 2008 until 2015. SANTA CLARA - John Donahoe is no stranger to the C-suite.
